Walter Lure Birthday Bash 2022 at the Bowery Electric

Walter Lure Birthday Bash 2022

Walter Lure was an integral part of New York City's underground rock circuit from the mid 1970s until his death from liver and lung cancer in 2020. Best known for his work in Johnny Thunders' Heartbreakers and the Waldos, Lure also performed on two albums by the Ramones, Subterranean Jungle and Too Tough to Die. In early 2020, Lure published his memoir, To Hell and Back: My Life In Johnny Thunders’ Heartbreakers, in the Words of the Last Man Standing.

Local promoters Barry Apfel and Steve Krebs celebrated Lure's legacy with a rock concert at the Bowery Electric, where Lure played most often in recent years, on the eve of what would have been his 73rd birthday. The evening featured two groups of Waldos, one consisted of early members and another consisting of the more recent members. The program also featured sets by Mike Skill of the Romantics, Steve Krebs & the Maynard G's, and Curtis Suburban. Several musicians who had worked with Lure also made guest appearances, including Andy Shernoff of the Dictators, Lynne Von Pang of the Carvels NYC, Sam Hariss of the Sweet Things, Cynthia Ross of the B-Girls and New York Junk, Joe Sztabnik of New York Junk, Chuck Bones of the Trash Bags, and Mick Stitch of the Threads NYC and LES Stitches.
