Remnants of New York City’s original punk scene in the 1970s gathered to remember the late Philippe Marcade, lead singer of the Senders, with a concert at the Bowery Electric on November 30. "Dedicated to Philippe Marcade" featured performances by Daddy Long Legs, Lucky 7 NYC, the Rousers, the Downtown Pidgeons, and several guests.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Senders regularly headlined weekend shows in New York’s punk circuit. The Senders became the unofficial house band at Max’s Kansas City and had long-running residencies at Continental Divide and McGovern’s. He later played in Gang War and the Backbones.

French-born, Marcade lived in the United States for about 40 years. Rooted in New York's music scene from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s, he eventually left New York City’s Lower East Side to live in France, Spain and Italy, occasionally returning to downtown New York City and playing a gig. Even from afar, he continued to tune into the New York music scene, consulting with this journalist periodically in recent years about buzzing local bands like Pinc Louds.
Marcade recorded three albums with the Senders. He authored two memoirs, Au-delà de l’Avenue D, published in 2006, and Punk Avenue: Inside the New York City Underground, 1972-1982, published in 2017. His last concert appearances in New York City were in May 2017.
Marcade succumbed peacefully among loved ones in Paris, France. on June 5, 2023, following a brief struggle with pancreatic cancer. He was 68 years old.
